When one visits the Davis Mountain State Park at Fort Davis, Texas, you realizes just how far away from anywhere one can be in Texas. The park is a jewel in the Texas Park system boosting the famous Indian Lodge built by the talented hands of the Civilian Conservation Corp. The CCC built a pavilion high on the hills overlooking the city and 19th century military base of Fort Davis (which is now a National Park) is the location of this painting. The painting was done on a cold, windy and misty grey day, where every hour I painted the bugle of Fort Davis was blown and could be heard echoing up the canyon. It took me back a hundred and fifty years to the view as seen then by any intrepid scout scanning the horizon for hostiles with the fort and the settlement below on the San Antonio El Paso road.
